Update/redraw views when there are no steps

Description

There seems to be no possibility to update/redraw views when there are no steps in the current session yet. Firing a selection event with step ID -1 seems to have to effect. This way, right after starting a new session, the old data is still visible (but not clickable). It would be nice to just be able to show blank views.

I don't remember why I thought this was an issue - it doesn't seem to impact any of our current products. (All sessions start with the creation of a step, so there is no need to ever display an empty session.) Reopen and reassign if it ever becomes an issue.
